Barcelona exercise caution as Frenkie de Jong returns to training

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has returned to training after a recent injury scare, but head coach Hansi Flick is adopting a cautious approach to avoid any setbacks.

The Dutch international suffered a gluteal issue while on duty with the Netherlands and has been training away from the main squad under the supervision of fitness staff.

According to reports in Spain, De Jong joined his teammates later for a light, individual session, which confirmed that the injury is not serious.

However, the decision to keep him separated highlights Barcelona’s new philosophy of prioritising long-term recovery rather than rushing players back onto the pitch.

Flick’s goal is to have the 28-year-old in peak condition for the Champions League clash with Newcastle.

The timing of De Jong’s setback has added to Barcelona’s midfield woes. With Gavi and Alejandro Balde also sidelined, Flick has been forced to rely on youngsters such as Marc Casado and established players like Pedri to fill the gaps.

The club is also carefully managing the return of academy prospect Marc Bernal, who has been out for a year following surgery. His reintegration is being handled with the same level of caution.

While De Jong’s progress has offered some relief, he will not feature in Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga match against Valencia on September 14.

The focus remains on easing him back gradually to ensure he avoids further complications.

The player’s absence continues to test Flick’s tactical plans, which depend on a physically resilient midfield to execute high-pressing, quick-transition football.

Gavi’s situation, however, remains more concerning. The Spain international continues to feel discomfort in the knee that required ACL surgery last year.

Barcelona’s medical team has so far favoured conservative treatment through physical therapy, but a minor arthroscopic procedure is now under serious consideration to alleviate the pain.

Balde, meanwhile, is still working toward full fitness, leaving the squad stretched for options.

With a congested fixture list on the horizon, Flick must balance the demands of domestic competition with Champions League ambitions.

The return of key midfielders, particularly De Jong, will be critical to Barcelona’s hopes of maintaining momentum, but the club insists it will not compromise player welfare for short-term gains.
