Borussia Dortmund rescued a late point against Bayern Munich in Saturday’s Der Klassiker as the Bundesliga champions endured a frustrating night on the injury front at the Allianz Arena.
The thrilling encounter finished 2-2, with Bayern pegged back twice and suffering three fresh injury concerns in the process.
Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry were both forced off in the space of three first-half minutes, while Michael Olise also departed with an apparent muscle problem late in the second half.
Saibari came off second best after a challenge with Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and was later seen leaving the stadium on crutches, raising fears of a more serious issue. Gnabry and Olise, meanwhile, both went to ground off the ball, suggesting muscular injuries.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen admitted after the match that he was unable to provide any clarity on the severity of the injuries to the trio.
On the pitch, Bayern twice led but were unable to kill the game. Konrad Laimer opened the scoring in the first half before newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane missed a golden chance to double the lead.
Kane, who presented his Ballon d’Or trophy to the Allianz Arena crowd before kick-off, struck the crossbar from the penalty spot in the 56th minute with Bayern 1-0 up.
Dortmund made them pay when Serhou Guirassy leveled the score, only for Dayot Upamecano to restore Bayern’s advantage with a powerful header.
Just when Bayern looked set to secure all three points, substitute Fabio Silva drilled home in the 89th minute to earn Borussia a deserved draw and keep both sides unbeaten after eight Bundesliga games.
The result leaves Bayern frustrated, having dominated large spells and missed key opportunities, while also facing an anxious wait on the fitness of three important players ahead of a busy run of fixtures.
