Benin suffer major setback as Nigeria and South Africa eye crucial World Cup qualification boosts

Benin’s hopes of maintaining their lead in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers have taken a hit ahead of their decisive clash with Nigeria.

The Cheetahs will be without two of their key players, defender Yohan Roche and midfielder Sessi D’Almeida, both of whom are suspended for the encounter.

Their absence comes at a critical stage in the qualifying campaign, with Group C still wide open and no team yet assured of a spot at next year’s global tournament.

The suspensions stem from yellow cards received during Benin’s recent match against Rwanda. D’Almeida was booked in the 84th minute, while Roche received his caution deep into stoppage time.

Both bookings triggered automatic one-match bans, ruling the duo out of Tuesday’s high-stakes showdown with the Super Eagles.

Their absence leaves coach Gernot Rohr with a significant selection dilemma, particularly in defence, where Roche’s experience and leadership have been vital.

The situation presents a welcome opportunity for Nigeria, who are chasing a vital win to revive their qualification prospects.

The Super Eagles, who edged Lesotho 2-1 in their last outing, will be eager to capitalize on Benin’s weakened lineup.

A victory could see Nigeria climb above their West African rivals, reigniting hopes of booking a ticket to the 2026 World Cup after a challenging qualification run.

South Africa also stand to benefit from Benin’s setback. Currently trailing closely behind in the standings, Bafana Bafana will be keeping a close eye on events in Abidjan, where Nigeria and Benin will face off.

However, South Africa must also do their part when they take on Rwanda, as only a win would allow them to take advantage of any slip-up from the group leaders.

Nigeria, however, have concerns of their own heading into the encounter. Star forward Ademola Lookman, recently crowned CAF African Footballer of the Year, will miss the match after receiving a yellow card against Lesotho.

His suspension is a blow to head coach Eric Chelle, who is expected to hand a starting opportunity to Samuel Chukwueze in attack.

With both Benin and Nigeria missing key figures, Group C’s balance could shift dramatically on Tuesday.
