Burnley Land Lesley Ugochukwu in £20m Deal from Chelsea

Burnley have confirmed the signing of French midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu from Chelsea in a deal worth over £20 million. The 21-year-old has penned a five-year contract at Turf Moor, becoming one of the club’s most significant summer acquisitions.

The fee is understood to be close to the £23.2 million Chelsea initially paid to bring Ugochukwu from Rennes in 2023. Despite his promising profile, Ugochukwu struggled to secure a regular place at Stamford Bridge, making just 15 appearances in all competitions during his debut season before being loaned to Southampton for the 2024-25 campaign.

Now, the Frenchman is set to begin a new chapter in his career under the guidance of Burnley’s management team, who made a compelling pitch to bring him on board.

“It’s a great feeling to sign for Burnley,” said Ugochukwu following the announcement. “As soon as I was made aware of the club’s interest in signing me, I was keen to hear more about the project. I spoke to the manager and Maxime [Esteve] – they were both so passionate about the club and the direction it’s heading in.

“It feels like this is the perfect move for me at this stage of my career with the ambition the club is showing.”

The move reflects Burnley’s intent to rebuild and compete more aggressively following their relegation from the Premier League. Managerial ambitions and a clear long-term vision were key factors in convincing the midfielder to make the switch.

Ugochukwu arrives at Burnley amid a wider reshuffling at Chelsea, where he had been deemed surplus to requirements. He was among a group of players training separately from new manager Enzo Maresca’s first team, often referred to as the ‘bomb squad’—a list that includes the likes of Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell, both of whom face uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

In addition to securing Ugochukwu’s services, Burnley are also actively pursuing Chelsea’s 23-year-old striker Armando Broja. Talks are ongoing, and while the exact transfer fee has not been confirmed, sources suggest it could rise to around £20 million if a deal is struck.

With Ugochukwu already through the door and further reinforcements in discussion, Burnley appear determined to rebuild a squad capable of a quick return to the Premier League.
