Cardiff will take center stage when the 2028 European Championship begins on June 9, as UEFA confirmed that the Welsh capital will host the tournament’s opening match. The month-long football festival, jointly hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, will culminate with the final at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 9.
The championship will feature 24 nations competing in 51 matches across nine venues in eight cities—Cardiff, Birmingham, Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and London. UEFA described the co-hosting arrangement as a “celebration of football unity across the British Isles.”
Wembley will again serve as a major stage, hosting both semifinals and one of the quarterfinals, underlining its status as one of Europe’s most iconic football venues. The remaining quarterfinals will take place in Dublin, Glasgow, and Cardiff, giving fans across the host nations a chance to witness the tournament’s defining moments.
Round of 16 matches will be played across all host cities except Wembley, ensuring an even spread of fixtures and fan engagement. According to UEFA, qualified host nations will enjoy the advantage of playing their group-stage matches on home soil—an arrangement expected to boost local enthusiasm and attendance.
The governing body also announced standardized kick-off times for the competition: 1400 GMT (7:30 PM IST), 1700 GMT (10:30 PM IST), and 2000 GMT (1:30 AM IST). These slots are designed to accommodate a global audience, with prime-time broadcasting for European and Asian markets.
In May, UEFA confirmed that England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland would all take part in the qualification campaign for Euro 2028. Only two automatic spots will be held in reserve if any of the hosts fail to qualify directly. This decision aims to maintain the competitive integrity of the qualifying process while ensuring that the hosts are represented in the tournament.
England, runners-up at Euro 2024, will be eager to go one step further on home turf, while Scotland hopes to improve after exiting in the group stage last year. Wales and Ireland, who missed out on the 2024 finals in Germany, will look to capitalize on home advantage in their bid for qualification.
Meanwhile, Belfast has been selected to host the Euro 2028 qualifying draw, which will take place in Northern Ireland’s capital on December 6, 2026, marking another milestone in the road to the tournament.
