In a pulsating encounter at Celtic Park, Celtic FC battled past a resilient Utrecht side with a 4-2 victory on Thursday, solidifying their position in the Europa League play-offs by finishing 21st in the 36-team league phase.
Under manager Martin O’Neill, the Hoops delivered a performance laced with early dominance, defensive lapses, and ultimate resilience, ensuring they advance to the knockout rounds amid high drama.
The match exploded into life right from the kickoff. Just six minutes in, Celtic capitalized on a cleverly worked short corner.
Left-back Kieran Tierney whipped in a precise cross, allowing Swedish forward Benjamin Nygren to slot home from close range inside the six-yard box, beating Utrecht’s goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas.
The early strike set the tone for a blistering opening spell from the Scottish giants.
Celtic doubled their advantage only four minutes later through a calamitous error from the visitors. Barkas, attempting to play out from the back, had his pass intercepted by the alert Nygren.
The forward’s subsequent cross deflected off Utrecht defender Nick Viergever and into his own net, leaving the Dutch side reeling at 2-0 down.
The Hoops’ momentum showed no signs of slowing. In the 19th minute, they were awarded a penalty after Auston Trusty’s header struck the arm of Utrecht’s Dani de Wit in the box.
Midfielder Arne Engels coolly stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick with precision, rifling it into the net from 12 yards to make it 3-0.
At this stage, Celtic appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable win, with Utrecht offering little threat in the first half.
However, the visitors sparked a comeback just before the interval. In the 44th minute, De Wit redeemed himself by controlling the ball neatly and curling a superb effort into the bottom-left corner past Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel, halving the deficit and injecting uncertainty into the proceedings.
The tension escalated further after the hour mark. In the 61st minute, Utrecht launched a swift counter-attack, culminating in Adrian Blake’s exquisite curling strike that flew beyond Schmeichel, narrowing the score to 3-2.
Celtic Park fell into a hush as the prospect of a stunning collapse loomed, with Utrecht suddenly sensing an opportunity to snatch a point or more.
Yet, Celtic regained composure swiftly. Four minutes later, in the 65th minute, Trusty rose to the occasion with a brilliant glancing header off Engels’ pinpoint delivery, directing it into the top-right corner.
The goal not only restored a two-goal cushion but also deflated Utrecht’s hopes of a fightback.
From there, Celtic managed the game astutely, holding firm to secure the crucial three points.
The win underscores their ability to thrive under pressure, blending attacking flair with defensive grit.
O’Neill praised his team’s character post-match, highlighting the importance of the result in a competitive Europa League campaign.
This victory propels Celtic into the play-offs with renewed confidence, where they aim to build on their European pedigree. Fans will hope this rollercoaster display is a sign of more thrilling football ahead.
