Chelsea ended their six-match winless streak in the Premier League with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on Monday. Goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella, and Noni Madueke propelled the Blues to fourth place in the table, while Wolves remain perilously close to the relegation zone, escaping it only on goal difference.
The win marked a critical moment for Chelsea, which had been as high as second in the league just weeks ago but had seen their form falter. Chelsea now sits on 40 points from 22 games, trailing league leaders Liverpool by 10 points but holding a narrow two-point lead over Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Chelsea struck first in the 24th minute when defender Tosin Adarabioyo capitalized on a loose ball in the box, calmly side-footing it into the net. Despite controlling much of the first half, Chelsea’s momentum was disrupted just before the break. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez mishandled a corner, dropping the ball into the path of Matt Doherty, who equalized for Wolves in stoppage time.
The mistake left the Stamford Bridge faithful on edge, fearing a repeat of recent matches where the Blues squandered leads.
The hosts regained control in the second half, thanks to the contributions of some key players. Marc Cucurella found himself in an advanced position to score Chelsea’s second, latching onto a flicked pass from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall—making his first league start for the Blues—on the hour mark.
Five minutes later, winger Noni Madueke sealed the win, ensuring Trevoh Chalobah’s goal-bound header crossed the line with a decisive touch. Reflecting on the moment, Madueke told Sky Sports, “It’s instinct. Attacker’s instinct. I knew it was going over the line. I said sorry to Trevoh after. I had to put this in the net for sure.”
Chelsea’s defense looked more composed with the return of Trevoh Chalobah, recalled from a loan at Crystal Palace. Club captain Reece James also made his first start after recovering from injury, boosting Enzo Maresca’s side ahead of a pivotal clash with Manchester City on Saturday.
However, injuries continue to plague the Blues. Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Romeo Lavia, and Enzo Fernandez were all unavailable, posing a challenge as Chelsea aims to solidify their top-four position and secure a Champions League spot for next season.
Wolves, meanwhile, face mounting pressure as they hover just above the relegation zone.
