Chelsea is reportedly keeping a watchful eye on AC Milan’s star goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, as the Italian club faces challenges in renewing his contract.
Mike Maignan, the 28-year-old French international, made a significant impact at AC Milan after their loss of Gianluigi Donnarumma to PSG. He helped secure the Serie A title in his debut season and has become a pivotal player for the club.
During the summer transfer window, several clubs expressed interest in Maignan, but AC Milan’s high valuation deterred many suitors. However, the situation remains under scrutiny, as an opportunity may arise for a potential transfer.
Chelsea had previously shown interest in Maignan during the summer but faced a refusal from AC Milan. The Blues were eager to revamp their goalkeeping department and made contact with the Italian club regarding the French goalkeeper.
In recent developments, Chelsea allowed Edouard Mendy to depart for Saudi Arabia and arranged a loan move for Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid. In exchange, they brought in Robert Sanchez from Brighton, who has assumed the No.1 position.
Nevertheless, Chelsea continues to explore options, including Maignan, as they keep an eye on the situation at AC Milan. The Italian club is keen to extend Maignan’s contract but is encountering financial challenges due to the player’s wage demands.
Maignan is reportedly seeking a salary in the range of €7-8 million, a figure that would place him among the top earners in Serie A. AC Milan is willing to double his current wages of €3.2 million at best. They aim to extend his contract until 2028, but the player’s salary expectations are proving to be a hurdle.
Chelsea may see an opportunity to secure Maignan next summer by offering an attractive financial package that outmuscles AC Milan. The French international’s playing style would undoubtedly enhance Chelsea’s squad, but they face competition in this pursuit.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is also considering a return for Maignan, a player they sold to LOSC Lille a few years ago. Chelsea will need a compelling offer to convince Maignan to join them, as PSG is expected to be a strong contender in this endeavor.
