Chelsea FC have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior after a disastrous run of five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring.
The decision followed Tuesday’s humiliating 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion FC, a result that left Chelsea seventh in the table and five points adrift of the Champions League qualification places with only four league matches remaining.
Rosenior’s dismissal comes just 106 days after he was appointed on a five-and-a-half-year contract in January.
In a statement confirming the decision, Chelsea said recent performances had “fallen below the necessary standards” despite there still being important targets left to fight for this season.
The club announced that Under-21s coach Calum McFarlane will take interim charge until the end of the campaign.
Chelsea added that they would undertake “a process of self-reflection” before appointing a permanent successor.
Rosenior arrived at Stamford Bridge following a successful spell with sister club RC Strasbourg Alsace after succeeding Enzo Maresca in January.
The 41-year-old initially made a promising start, guiding Chelsea to eight wins and two draws in his opening 12 matches in all competitions.
However, a sharp collapse in form followed a league defeat to Arsenal FC in March, with Chelsea winning only two of his final 11 games in charge.
The poor run culminated in Chelsea recording their worst sequence of defeats without scoring since 1912.
Supporters increasingly turned their frustration toward both the manager and the club’s ownership, with protests against the board intensifying in recent weeks.
Rosenior himself admitted after the Brighton defeat that his side’s display had been “indefensible” and “unacceptable,” while reports suggested growing tensions within the squad over team selections, tactical decisions, and communication inside the dressing room.
Chelsea’s hierarchy are already considering potential replacements ahead of the summer.
Reports indicate that Andoni Iraola, currently set to leave AFC Bournemouth at the end of the season, is among the leading candidates.
Marco Silva of Fulham FC and former Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzić are also believed to be under consideration for the role.
Rosenior leaves Chelsea with a record of 11 wins, two draws, and 10 defeats from his 23 matches in charge across all competitions.
Despite the turmoil, Chelsea still have an opportunity to salvage their season, with an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United FC at Wembley looming this weekend and the race for European qualification still mathematically within reach.
