The emphatic win means Chelsea has now won all four major UEFA club competitions — a feat no other team has achieved. Having previously claimed the Champions League (2012, 2021), Europa League (2013, 2019), and the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup (1971, 1998), the Conference League victory fills the final gap in their European trophy cabinet.
Despite a bright start from Betis, who were appearing in their first-ever European final, it was Chelsea who walked away with silverware. Abdessamad Ezzalzouli gave the Spanish side a shock lead in the 9th minute, capitalizing on an early lapse in Chelsea’s defense. However, the Andalusian club struggled to maintain their momentum after halftime.
The game turned on its head in the second half thanks to Chelsea’s attacking power and depth. Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson scored within five minutes of each other, in the 65th and 70th minutes, both expertly finishing crosses from Cole Palmer, who proved instrumental in sparking the comeback.
With Betis reeling, Jadon Sancho added a third, showing composure in front of goal, and Moises Caicedo sealed the rout with a powerful finish late on. Chelsea’s substitutes made a notable impact, highlighting the depth of the squad built by manager Enzo Maresca in his debut season.
“This was about belief and hard work,” Maresca said after the match. “The players never panicked and showed what they’re capable of in the second half. This is just the beginning for us.”
While the match showcased high-quality football, it was marred by pre-match fan unrest in the host city, with Polish authorities confirming 28 arrests in connection to incidents involving both sets of supporters.
For Chelsea, the victory capped off a successful week. On Sunday, they clinched fourth place in the Premier League, securing a return to the Champions League. The Conference League trophy also marked the club’s first silverware under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who took over in 2022 and have since invested heavily in the squad.
Meanwhile, the loss brought an end to a remarkable streak for Spanish clubs, who had won all 23 continental finals involving their teams since the 2001-02 season. Betis, despite their spirited start, will have to wait longer for their first taste of European glory.
