Cucurella joins Real Madrid from Chelsea

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million. 

The La Liga giants confirmed the transfer on Monday, with the 27-year-old agreeing to a six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu. 

The agreement includes an initial fee of £47.5 million, with a further £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons.

Cucurella joins Madrid while representing Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. 

The former Brighton defender had long been linked with a return to his homeland after spending four seasons in the Premier League. 

A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, he had also attracted interest from both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid before opting for a move to the Spanish capital.

The left-back arrived at Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 for £63 million and went on to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge. 

During his time with the Blues, he helped the club secure both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup titles. 

However, his final campaign in west London was overshadowed by instability both on and off the pitch.

Reports suggested Cucurella became increasingly frustrated with the club’s direction, particularly following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca midway through the season. 

The Spaniard was among a group of players who struggled to adapt under successor Liam Rosenior, as Chelsea endured a disappointing campaign that ended with a 10th-place Premier League finish and no European qualification.

Despite having three years remaining on his contract, Chelsea opted to accept Madrid’s offer as they continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season. 

Cucurella’s departure marks another significant change during a turbulent period at Stamford Bridge, where former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has since been appointed manager for the 2026-27 campaign.

Real Madrid’s acquisition of Cucurella is expected to be one of several major moves this summer. 

Since Florentino Perez’s re-election as club president and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as head coach, the Spanish giants have reportedly targeted additional reinforcements. 

They include Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries and former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, as they seek to build a squad capable of challenging for domestic and European honours.
