Doku returns to Belgium squad after welcoming first child

Belgium winger Jérémy Doku has rejoined the national team in North America for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup after briefly returning to London for the birth of his first son, Praise.

The 24-year-old Manchester City player landed in Seattle on Tuesday night, ready to help the Red Devils in their crucial final Group G match against New Zealand on Friday in Vancouver.

The game is a must-win for Belgium following disappointing draws against Egypt and Iran.

Doku was warmly welcomed back at the team hotel with applause and hugs from his teammates.

The Belgian federation publicly backed his personal decision, although it sparked online debate and criticism from some fans.

Doku had missed the goalless draw against Iran on Sunday, but his absence was due to a respiratory illness rather than the birth itself.

He left the squad shortly afterwards with the federation’s approval and was accompanied by a team doctor on the flight to London to support his recovery. He is expected to be available for selection against New Zealand.

Belgium captain Youri Tielemans said on Monday that the team had sent a text message to congratulate Doku and his wife.

Last week, Doku had already expressed his strong intention to be present for the birth of his son with his wife Shireen, even though her due date in the second week of July could have coincided with a potential quarter-final match.

His return boosts Belgium’s attacking options at a vital stage of the tournament. The European side now needs a strong performance against New Zealand to advance from the group, with Doku’s pace and creativity likely to play a key role if he starts.

The federation’s supportive stance highlights a balance between professional commitments and personal milestones, though public opinion remains divided.
