Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has reached an agreement with the English FA, and he is set to become the next Three Lions boss. According to local reports in England late on Tuesday, the FA negotiated the terms with the German representatives, and it is likely that he will be announced as Gareth Southgate’s replacement soon after interim boss Lee Carsley was told he will not get the role.
When announced, he will become England’s third non-British permanent manager after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Tuchel has been unattached to any club after leaving Bayern in May, despite still having a year to run on his contract, as the German giants surrendered their thirteen-year dominance of the German topflight to Bayer Leverkusen.
He was linked with a move to Manchester United as intense pressure mounts on Erik Ten Hag following a poor start to the 2024-25 campaign.
England have been without a substantive manager since Gareth Southgate stepped down from the role after England’s EURO 2024 final loss against Spain in Germany.
England’s U21 coach, Lee Carsley, was brought in on an interim basis, and he is expected to return to his role – where he guided the team to the European U21 Championship in 2023 – when a new manager is found for the Three Lions.
Since he stepped into the interim role, Carsley has led The Three Lions to four matches, recording three wins and one defeat in the Nations League.
After his first two victories as an interim manager, Carsley suffered a shocking defeat against Greece at Wembley last Thursday before a 3-1 triumph against Finland in Helsinki on Sunday.
Meanwhile, it was reported on Monday by The Times that the FA made informal contact with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola at the start of the season. However, he did not reply to their query.
Other names previously linked with the job include Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
