Former world footballer of the year Luis Figo has tipped Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain to this season’s UEFA Champions League.
The legend also warned that Inter, one of the favorites, ‘are not only about defending’ and could take the treble.
The season is about to end as we go into its closing stages as we await the Champions League semi-finals. The Paris club will travel to London again for the first leg of the semi-finals to play Arsenal before the second leg in Paris.
Both teams have qualified for the finals once in their history, losing to Barcelona and Bayern Munich, respectively.
With the big boys already out of the competition, it’s an opportunity for them to win. At least one of them will be in the finals and play either Inter Milan or Barcelona.
Speaking during the Laureus Awards in Madrid, former Real Madrid star in his view tipped Paris Saint-Germain.
“They have a good consistency of results and excellent physical fitness at the moment. It’s difficult to say for certain, I don’t feel that I can make a really strong prediction on who will win the Champions League.”
On getting to this stage, PSG had to eliminate England powerhouse Liverpool in the round of 16 and Aston Villa in the quarter-finals.
If they succeed in beating Arsenal who had beaten them in the group stage of the tournament this season, they will set a record of knocking out three English clubs out of the competition in one season.
When asked about the other semi-final between Barcelona and Inter, he pointed out that both teams have very different styles.
“Anyone who thinks that Inter are only about defending is making a big mistake. It’s true Simone Inzaghi’s side are solid in defense and conceded very few Champions League goals, but they also have players capable of making the difference.
“You need to analyze it more carefully, not just limit yourself to saying they are just a defensive team. ‘Inter could win the Treble this season.”
Meanwhile, their hope of achieving that is hanging by a thread after suffering a setback on Sunday, following a 1-0 defeat against Bologna, a result which leaves them the same points at the summit of the Serie A with Napoli that had snuffed out a win at Monza 24 hours earlier.
