Defender Ryan Flamingo scored a dramatic extra-time winner to secure PSV Eindhoven’s 3-1 home victory over Juventus on Wednesday, overturning a first-leg deficit and propelling the Dutch side into the Champions League last 16 with a 4-3 aggregate triumph.
The tie was balanced at 3-3 on aggregate after 90 minutes, forcing extra time at the Philips Stadion. Flamingo capitalized on a defensive error in the 98th minute, tapping home the decisive goal and sealing Juventus’ fate. The Italian giants became the third Serie A side to exit the competition this week, following AC Milan and Atalanta’s eliminations on Tuesday.
Juventus entered the second leg with a 2-1 advantage, but PSV drew level on aggregate when veteran Ivan Perisic opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. The Croatia international finished brilliantly after Noa Lang’s incisive run and cutback, controlling the ball with a delicate first touch before unleashing a half-volley into the far corner.
The visitors quickly responded, with Timothy Weah equalizing 10 minutes later. PSV cleared a Juventus free kick, but the ball fell kindly to Weah, who unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the box. The goal stood only after a VAR check confirmed no offside in the buildup.
PSV regained the lead in the 74th minute when Perisic turned provider. He powered into the box and crossed for Luuk de Jong, whose attempt to control the ball fell to Ismael Saibari. The Moroccan forward made no mistake from close range, making it 2-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.
The Dutch side continued to dominate, creating several chances to finish the tie before extra time. Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio produced a fine save to deny Saibari, but the visitors’ resistance crumbled in the 98th minute. Johan Bakayoko’s cross caused chaos in the Juventus defense, and a mix-up between Di Gregorio and Federico Gatti allowed Flamingo to pounce and secure the winner.
“Compliments to everyone for how they did it. Everyone gave it their all, but we also played good football at times,” said PSV captain Luuk de Jong.
Juventus skipper Manuel Locatelli admitted his side fell short: “They played better than us and wanted to qualify more. The result always speaks—the rest is just chatter. We have to look each other in the eyes and understand what the problems were.”
With the win, PSV advanced to the Champions League Round of 16 for the first time since 2016, while Juventus will now turn their focus back to domestic competition.
