Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher not completely sure about new signing Darwin Nunez

A lot of signings in this summer transfer window have raised a few eyebrows and one of them was Liverpool securing the services of former SL Benfica man Darwin Nunez. It was a record breaking deal for the Reds and the young forward came for big bucks and many people have different opinions on the youngster who will be leading the lines for Jurgen Klopp’s men in the upcoming Premier League season.

Nunez was very impressive during his stint at Benfica where he scored 34 goals in 41 appearances for the Portuguese outfit and flourished in the UEFA Champions League aswell. There were comparisons made of him with Erling Haaland given they are both lanky and have scored a lot of goals. Some people believe that these are the players who will lead modern football in coming years.

But Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is not very certain about Nunez clicking on right from the start of the upcoming season. He feels that the side effects of losing someone as experienced and proven as Sadio Mane will be felt by the German manager and his camp. Mane has joined Bayern Munich after a long stay at Anfield.

Carragher feels that Liverpool will be judged on whether they are able to claim the Premier League title in the upcoming season. “I think that remains to be seen. When you lose someone like Mane, who has been so pivotal for four or five years, and you’re bringing in a sort of unknown quantity in Nunez,” he told a sports radio station.

While the former defender is not sure how much the Uruguayan will be able to fill up the void left by Mane, he shared how Nunez has shown glimpses of his brilliance and looks like a player with pedigree. But has reserved his judgement as new players need time to settle in the Premier League. “He looks a top player and has great pedigree — and Liverpool did need to bring the average age of that front-three down. It’s difficult to say they look stronger right now, considering how good Mane was, certainly in the second half of last season,” Carragher continued.

Nunez has already proven his doubters wrong with a splendid performance against RB Leipzig as he scored four goals. While he still gets into the rhythm and gels up nicely with his Liverpool teammates, the fans and experts will have their opinion on the Uruguayan marksman. It will be interesting to see if Nunez and Diogo Jota manage to fill the void left by Mane or not as Klopp aims to win the Premier League title.
