France’s All-Time Top Scorer Olivier Giroud Announces Retirement from International Football

In the wake of France’s unexpected exit from the UEFA Euro 2024, Olivier Giroud has officially announced his retirement from international football. Giroud leaves the French national team as its all-time leading scorer and the third-highest appearance maker, capping an illustrious international career.

Giroud’s journey with Les Bleus has been nothing short of remarkable. The forward reflected on his national team career, acknowledging the challenges he faced. 

“My career with the French national team hasn’t always been a smooth ride. I’ve sometimes doubted and suffered criticism, but deep down I’ve never stopped believing,” Giroud said in a heartfelt statement. 

“Hard work, humility, and prayers have helped me through the difficult times. Thanks to the unfailing support of my wife and my four wonderful children, I’ve always found the strength to fight and come back even stronger each time,” he added.

Giroud’s national team journey began in 2011 after he impressed with Montpellier. He made his debut for France on November 11, 2011, and scored his first international goal just three months later in a friendly against Germany, contributing to a 2-1 victory. From there, Giroud quickly established himself as a key player for France.

By 2016, Giroud had earned his 50th cap, and in 2020, he reached the milestone of 100 international appearances. His most notable achievement came during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Giroud equaled Thierry Henry’s record of 51 goals for France with a brace against Australia in the group stage and subsequently broke the record by scoring in the round-of-16 victory over Poland. 

He finished his international career with 57 goals in 137 appearances, making him France’s highest scorer and the third-highest cap-holder, behind only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram.

“Olivier can leave the French team with a sense of achievement,” said France manager Didier Deschamps. 

“More generally, I’d like to highlight his unwavering commitment. For that, too, we must say bravo and thank you.”

In addition to his international success, Giroud enjoyed a prolific club career. He played for top European clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and AC Milan. His tenure at these clubs saw him win numerous titles, including the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League.

As Giroud steps away from the French national team, he is also preparing for a new chapter in his career. He has signed with Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC, marking the end of his time in European football. The move to MLS signifies a fresh start for Giroud, who is eager to continue his playing career in the United States.
