Grimsby Town produced one of the shocks of the season as they knocked Manchester United out of the EFL Cup in a breathtaking penalty shootout at Blundell Park. 

The League Two side held their nerve to win 12-11 on spot-kicks after United had fought back from two goals down in normal time.

The hosts stunned Erik ten Hag’s side by racing into a 2-0 lead, with Tyrell Warren and Jaze Kabia both striking to put Grimsby on the brink of a famous victory. 

Manchester United, however, clawed their way back in the closing stages. Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining, before Harry Maguire powered home a late header to force the game into penalties.

What followed was one of the most extraordinary shootouts in EFL Cup history. Both sides converted their opening ten penalties, with neither goalkeeper able to find a decisive save.

Even Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana scored from the spot to keep his team alive, before Grimsby counterpart Christy Pym responded in kind.

The drama eventually ended when Bryan Mbeumo, United’s summer signing, saw his effort crash off the crossbar at 11-11. Darragh Burns then stepped up for Grimsby, calmly dispatching his penalty past Onana to seal an unforgettable 12-11 triumph for the Mariners.

Neutral supporters flooded social media with excitement, many admitting they were hoping the penalties would “never end.”

For Manchester United, the defeat adds further pressure on Ruben Amorim, whose side have made a shaky start to the season.

For Grimsby, however, it marks a night that will go down in club folklore, as they sent one of England’s biggest clubs crashing out of the league cup in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

Manchester United will now turn their attention to the Premier League where they face Burnley. The defeat also means limited trophy chances for United leaving them with the FA Cup and Premier League.
