Manchester City have confirmed the return of goalkeeper James Trafford on a five-year contract, in a move worth £27 million, after his standout season with Burnley.
The 21-year-old, who came through City’s youth system before leaving in 2023, was instrumental in Burnley’s promotion back to the Premier League last season. His commanding presence between the posts helped the Clarets concede just 16 goals in the Championship, the fewest in the division and 14 fewer than title-winners Leeds United.
Trafford’s stellar form earned him the Golden Glove with 29 clean sheets, underlining his rapid development into one of England’s most promising young goalkeepers.
“Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City,” Trafford said in the club’s official statement. “This is the place I call home – it’s a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play.”
Trafford originally joined City’s academy as a youngster and spent loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers before making a permanent switch to Burnley in 2023. While his first Premier League campaign ended in disappointment with relegation, the 6ft 6in shot-stopper rediscovered top form in the Championship, rebuilding his reputation as one of England’s brightest goalkeeping prospects.
“I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving – and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be,” Trafford added, highlighting his determination to succeed under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage.
Manchester City confirmed that Trafford will wear the number one jersey, a clear signal of the faith the club has in him as part of their long-term plans. His arrival adds depth and competition to the squad as City prepare to defend their Premier League crown, with the new season kicking off away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16.
For Trafford, the move represents both a homecoming and the chance to fulfil the potential City first spotted in him as a youth prospect. For City, it strengthens their goalkeeping options as they chase a seventh league title in nine seasons.
