In a dramatic turnaround at the Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday night, Julian Alvarez scored a sensational hat-trick to lead Atletico Madrid to a 3-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, salvaging what could have been another disappointing outing for Diego Simeone’s struggling side.
The Argentine forward struck twice in the final eight minutes, including an 88th-minute thunderbolt from the edge of the box, to snatch a crucial win for Atletico, who now sit eighth in the table with nine points from six matches.
Atletico started strong, dominating possession and creating early chances. Their pressure paid off in the 15th minute when Marcos Llorente’s looping cross found Alvarez ghosting in at the far post. The striker volleyed home with precision to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Despite maintaining control throughout much of the first half, Atletico failed to extend their advantage. Alvarez himself squandered a golden opportunity when he failed to convert Antoine Griezmann’s cross, and the home side’s wastefulness proved costly.
In first-half stoppage time, Rayo Vallecano struck back spectacularly. Left-back Pep Chavarria launched a thunderous 30-metre effort that sailed into the top-left corner, silencing the Metropolitano crowd and shifting the momentum heading into the break.
Rayo returned with more intent after halftime, but it was Atletico who nearly regained the lead. In the 58th minute, Nico Gonzalez missed a sitter from close range, heading wide after another brilliant delivery from Llorente. Gonzalez’s disbelief was evident as he sank to his knees.
The visitors took full advantage in the 77th minute when Alvaro Garcia latched onto Isi Palazon’s through ball, rounded Jan Oblak and tapped into an empty net. Initially flagged offside, the goal was awarded after a VAR review confirmed Garcia had timed his run perfectly.
But Julian Alvarez had other plans.
He struck again in the 80th minute, reacting quickest when a deflected shot came back off the goalkeeper, calmly slotting in the equaliser. Then, with two minutes left on the clock, Alvarez unleashed a curling shot from the edge of the area that flew into the top-right corner — completing his hat-trick and sealing a dramatic win.
“We needed to get three points really badly and build confidence by winning a game, and it is great that we did it,” Alvarez said post-match.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s derby against league leaders Real Madrid, he added: “We have to keep working hard to continue this winning streak. We’re going to play against Real at home in front of our fans, who were just incredible today. It’s going to be a great spectacle and we’ll give everything to take all three points.”
