Klopp says his team needs to be re-invented after Napoli defeat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that his team needs to reinvent itself after an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Napoli in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The result is a new low for Liverpool, who have had a chaotic start to the Premier League this season. The Reds have only won two games out of six Premier League matches this season; they have three draws and a loss in total to sit 7th on the table with 9 points.

Liverpool was a losing finalist last season in the competition to UEFA Champions League record holders Real Madrid who won 1-0 in Paris, France, in May.

On Wednesday, the Reds started poorly and were almost punished in the first minute by Nigerian striker Victor, who hit the base of the post after rounding the goalkeeper Alisson.

A few minutes later, Liverpool would concede with Piotr Zielinski scoring from the spot while Zambo Anguissa (31’minutes) and Simeone (44’minutes) extended the lead in the first half.

It could have easily been 6-0 in the first half as Victor Osimehn had a penalty saved by Alisson, and Van Dijk also cleared the ball off the line at some point.

Liverpool was disjointed in their display up to the extent that they conceded in the first minute of the second half as Zelensky had his brace on the night; there was a consolation for Liverpool as Luis Diaz found the net two minutes later.

Klopp admitted that the team was poor and needed to change things quickly.

“We played bad in the first half, but usually we don’t concede three goals. With Alisson in goal, you have to be really bad for that to happen. We played here when we lost 2-0, and that was an awful game. It looks like we have to reinvent ourselves. There are a lot of things lacking.” He said.
