The win allowed Barcelona to capitalize on slip-ups by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid over the weekend. With 51 points, Barca now leads the standings on goal difference, level with Real Madrid, while Atletico sits just one point behind. Rayo, whose impressive nine-match unbeaten run came to an end, remains sixth with 35 points.
Despite Barcelona controlling possession for much of the game, it was Rayo that posed the greater attacking threat. However, the decisive moment came in the 28th minute when Pathe Ciss was adjudged to have fouled Inigo Martinez inside the box after a lengthy VAR check. Referee Mario Melero Lopez pointed to the spot, and Lewandowski calmly converted, sending the home fans into celebration.
Rayo responded aggressively and forced Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny into multiple saves to preserve the narrow lead. The visitors thought they had a legitimate claim for a penalty of their own when Pau Cubarsi appeared to foul Ciss in an incident that closely mirrored Barca’s awarded penalty. Their frustration only grew when Jorge de Frutos’ goal was ruled out in the 42nd minute, a decision that sparked heated protests from the Rayo players.
Barcelona’s defense, led by Martinez and Szczesny, was crucial in securing the win. Just before halftime, Martinez made a heroic goal-line clearance to deny Rayo an equalizer, while Szczesny pulled off several key saves in the second half.
Rayo had their golden opportunity in added time when de Frutos missed a close-range header, squandering the chance to snatch a dramatic point.
After the final whistle, Rayo manager Inigo Perez expressed his frustration but stopped short of directly criticizing the officials.
“I prefer to keep to myself my opinion regarding the referee today, but everyone acts as they should or believe they should,” Perez told *Movistar Plus.*
The coach admitted the loss was difficult to digest, given his team’s performance.
“You always have the pain of losing, but today, it will take a few hours for me to calm down, considering everything that happened and the way we played. At the moment, the only word I can find is bitterness.”
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be relieved to have secured the win, despite the controversy, as they push forward in the tight La Liga title race.
