Liverpool are weighing a move for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, after a breakout Bundesliga season saw the 23-year-old net 15 goals and provide eight assists across 31 starts. The French forward emerged as one of the most complete attackers in Germany last term, prompting growing interest from Premier League clubs.
While Newcastle United were initially seen as frontrunners to secure Ekitike’s signature, sources suggest their efforts have stalled, with the Magpies now expected to accelerate talks for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa within the next 24 hours.
Ekitike, who registered more shots on goal (117) than any other Bundesliga player last season, also posted an expected goals (xG) total of 21.6—second only in the league. His creative output placed him in the top 6% of forwards for assists, underlining his dual-threat profile.
Originally a promising talent at Stade de Reims, Ekitike chose Paris Saint-Germain early in his career but struggled to make an impact amid heavy attacking competition. A loan move to Frankfurt in early 2024 reignited his form, leading to a permanent transfer.
Under manager Dino Toppmoller, Ekitike thrived in multiple attacking systems. In the first half of last season, he formed a potent partnership with Omar Marmoush. After Marmoush’s £63 million move to Manchester City in January, Frankfurt reshaped their attack, deploying Ekitike as a lone forward supported by attacking midfielders.
Despite Liverpool’s primary interest in Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, any potential deal for the Swede appears unlikely. The Magpies have firmly stated Isak is not for sale at any price.
Liverpool have already made significant investments this summer, landing Florian Wirtz in a potential British-record £116 million move, and reinforcing their defense with full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong for a combined £70 million.
With Jurgen Klopp’s successor keen on adding depth and versatility to Liverpool’s front line, Ekitike’s profile fits the mold. His ability to play centrally or in a dual-striker system offers tactical flexibility, something that could prove valuable in a demanding Premier League campaign.
