Liverpool have moved swiftly in their search for a new manager, reaching a verbal agreement with Andoni Iraola to become the club’s next head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot.
The Spaniard, who departed Bournemouth at the end of the season, has emerged as Liverpool’s preferred candidate and is now expected to take charge at Anfield. Reports indicate that Iraola is set to sign a two-year contract, with a formal announcement anticipated later this week.
The appointment marks a significant change for Liverpool, who parted ways with Slot just one year after he guided the club to the Premier League title. Club officials have been eager to identify a replacement quickly, with the aim of ensuring stability ahead of the new campaign.
Iraola, 43, has built a strong reputation for implementing an energetic and attacking style of football, characteristics that align closely with Liverpool’s long-term vision. The club’s hierarchy has been seeking a coach capable of delivering aggressive, front-foot football, and Iraola’s work at Bournemouth made him a standout candidate for the role.
The recruitment process has been overseen by Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked alongside Iraola during his time at Bournemouth. That existing relationship is understood to have played an important role in the discussions surrounding the appointment.
As he prepares for a potential move to Merseyside, Iraola is keen to bring trusted members of his Bournemouth backroom staff with him. Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper, who served as his assistants at the south coast club, are among the names he would like to add to his coaching team at Liverpool.
However, Bournemouth are yet to receive any formal communication from either Elphick or Cooper regarding their futures. The situation remains unresolved as Liverpool continue to finalise arrangements for Iraola’s arrival.
Elphick, a former Bournemouth captain and lifelong Liverpool supporter, is believed to be open to the opportunity should an approach be made. The 38-year-old recently declined the chance to become Bristol City manager, choosing instead to evaluate alternative options.
Iraola’s expected appointment would represent another major step in his coaching journey. Throughout his managerial career, which has included spells at AEK Larnaca, Mirandés, Rayo Vallecano and Bournemouth, he has consistently preferred short-term contracts while establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly regarded coaches.
Liverpool supporters are now awaiting official confirmation as the club prepares to begin a new era under the Spanish tactician.
