Lukaku proves vital as Belgium gear up for World Cup

Youri Tielemans has underlined Romelu Lukaku’s enduring importance to Belgium after the striker netted in their 2-0 friendly victory over Croatia on Tuesday.

Lukaku, making his first Belgium appearance in nearly a year, came off the bench to score a stoppage-time goal that sealed the win in this World Cup warm-up fixture.

The result provided a timely boost for the Red Devils as they prepare for the tournament in North America.

Captain Tielemans opened the scoring in the 38th minute before setting up Hans Vanaken, whose header struck the woodwork.

However, it was Lukaku’s clinical finish that ultimately settled the contest, marking his 90th international goal. Notably, this was his first strike as a substitute since October 2017.

Despite limited club action, managing just seven appearances for Napoli in the 2025-26 season due to injury, Lukaku continues to deliver for his country.

Speaking after the match, Aston Villa midfielder Tielemans was full of praise for the forward’s qualities.

“He is such an important player to us. He is sharp mentally and physically, and that is what we love about him,” said Tielemans, highlighting Lukaku’s resilience and leadership within the squad.

Lukaku stands as Belgium’s all-time record goalscorer and shares the record for most World Cup goals for the nation with five, level with Marc Wilmots.

His experience and finishing ability make him a central figure as Belgium seek redemption following their group-stage exit in Qatar 2022.

The team will play one final warm-up against Tunisia before launching their Group G campaign against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt on June 15.

They will then face Iran and New Zealand in what promises to be a challenging group.

With renewed confidence from Lukaku’s return and clinical form, Belgium will be hoping their star striker can lead them deep into the tournament.

Tielemans’ belief in the 32-year-old underscores the squad’s reliance on his proven pedigree at major championships.
