Manchester United moved a step closer to securing a return to the UEFA Champions League after grinding out a tense 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko gave Michael Carrick’s side a commanding first-half advantage before a late strike from Mathias Jensen ensured a nervy finish in front of 73,773 supporters.
United made a bright start and were rewarded in the 11th minute when Casemiro opened the scoring.
The Brazilian midfielder rose highest to meet a delivery assisted by Harry Maguire and powered home to give the hosts an early lead.
Brentford struggled to contain United’s midfield pressure in the opening stages as Carrick’s men controlled possession and dictated the tempo.
The home side doubled their advantage just before half-time through Sesko. Bruno Fernandes produced another decisive contribution with a perfectly weighted assist that allowed the striker to finish clinically in the 43rd minute.
The assist marked Fernandes’ 19th of the Premier League season, leaving him just one short of the competition’s single-season assist record.
Brentford improved after the break and pushed aggressively for a route back into the contest.
Despite sustained pressure, the visitors repeatedly failed to produce the final ball needed to seriously test United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Tempers also began to flare, with Igor Thiago booked for hauling down Ayden Heaven, while Joshua Zirkzee later received a yellow card moments after coming on for kicking the ball away.
The visitors finally found a breakthrough in the 87th minute when Jensen produced a superb strike from the edge of the area.
Cutting inside before curling an effort into the top-left corner, the Brentford midfielder sparked hopes of a dramatic late comeback.
Moments later, Mikkel Damsgaard nearly equalised with a powerful header, but Lammens reacted well to keep the effort out as United desperately held on through five minutes of stoppage time.
The victory strengthens Manchester United’s push for a top-four finish and keeps them firmly on course for Champions League qualification next season.
Brentford, meanwhile, extended their frustrating run of league draws and near-misses, continuing a stretch that has seen them struggle to convert promising performances into victories.
