Manchester United stalling about Maguire contract extension

Manchester United have yet to open formal talks over a contract extension for Harry Maguire, leaving the veteran defender’s future unresolved as interest grows from clubs abroad.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and, since January 1, has been free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas teams.

Reports indicate that intermediaries representing sides in Italy’s Serie A and the Turkish Super Lig have already contacted Maguire’s representatives.

While a move outside England is a possibility, the defender is settled in the north-west with his family and is understood to favour remaining close to home if an agreement with United can be reached.

Despite the uncertainty off the pitch, Maguire has enjoyed a late-career resurgence in key fixtures.

He was named Man of the Match in United’s dramatic 3-2 win over Arsenal at the weekend and was also instrumental in the recent clean-sheet victory over Manchester City, further underlining his reputation as a reliable performer in high-pressure games.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has leaned on Maguire’s experience during a period marked by injuries and inconsistency in defence.

Limited by fitness issues earlier in the campaign, the centre-back has since returned fully fit and formed a steady partnership with Lisandro Martinez, providing stability in a back line that has otherwise struggled.

United’s hesitation is partly driven by financial considerations. Maguire is among the club’s higher earners, and the hierarchy are keen to reduce the wage bill, but the lack of affordable, proven replacements in the transfer market complicates the decision.

With other defensive targets no longer available, the cost of replacing his leadership and reliability could be significant.

The final call is expected to hinge on performance, finances and the club’s European ambitions.

Champions League qualification would ease budgetary pressures, while Maguire himself remains motivated by the prospect of extending his England career ahead of the World Cup.

For now, with no talks underway, his future at Old Trafford remains finely balanced.
