Kylian Mbappe moved alongside Real Madrid great Raul on the all-time Champions League and European Cup scoring list as the Spanish giants survived a late Inter Milan fightback to secure victory.

The France captain struck in the 14th minute, clinically finishing from just inside the penalty area with Real Madrid’s first attempt on target. It was Mbappe’s 71st goal in 99 appearances in the competition, drawing him level with Raul, who reached the same total in 142 games.

The 27-year-old now sits joint-fifth on the competition’s historic scoring chart. Only Karim Benzema, with 90 goals, Robert Lewandowski with 109, Lionel Messi with 129 and record-holder Cristiano Ronaldo with 140 have scored more.

Real doubled their advantage nine minutes after Mbappe’s opener following a costly mistake from Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez. After receiving a back pass from Benjamin Pavard, Martinez lost possession to Federico Valverde, allowing the Real captain to tap the ball over the line.

Inter had created opportunities of their own during a lively opening half. Thibaut Courtois, making his 100th Champions League appearance, denied efforts from Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez.

Former Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones also went close for the Italian champions, striking the top of the crossbar.

Martinez responded well to his earlier error before half-time. The Spanish goalkeeper produced a double save to deny Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, before the woodwork prevented Real from extending their lead.

The chances continued after the break, with Bellingham wasting a major opportunity to put the game beyond Inter. The visitors remained in contention and introduced John Stones, who won the Champions League with Manchester City in 2023.

Inter finally found a breakthrough in the 77th minute when Carlos Augusto swept home, setting up a tense conclusion.

The goal ensured a dramatic finish between Jose Mourinho’s current and former clubs, but Real held on to claim the victory.

Despite the result, the performance did not satisfy sections of the home support. Real Madrid fans made their frustration clear during the match as the record 15-time European champions struggled to put Inter away.

For Mbappe, however, the night brought another significant individual milestone as he joined one of Real Madrid’s most celebrated Champions League figures in the competition’s record books.
