The 31-year-old forward was sent off in the 76th minute after illegally using his hand to push the ball into the net — a moment that saw his second yellow card and the disallowance of the goal. With Santos already struggling at the bottom of the Brazilian league, the incident proved pivotal. Botafogo capitalized on the man advantage and scored the game’s only goal in the 86th minute.
“Desperation to score a goal sometimes leads to mistakes,” Neymar posted on Instagram after the match. “I want to apologize to my teammates and to the fans. I made a mistake, forgive me. If I hadn’t been sent off, I’m sure we would have gotten the three points. Congratulations to the team for today’s game. You can put these three points on my account.”
The match could be Neymar’s final outing with Santos, the club where he began his professional career. His contract expires at the end of June, and with just one league match remaining before the Club World Cup break — a match he is now suspended for — there is uncertainty around whether he will play for the team again. No agreement has been reached to extend his contract.
Neymar, who had already received a yellow card in the first half for a foul, accepted responsibility for the second booking but expressed frustration with the officiating.
