Portugal clinch Nations League title in dramatic penalty shootout against Spain

Portugal emerged victorious in a thrilling UEFA Nations League final, defeating Spain 5-3 on penalties after a gripping 2-2 draw that extended into extra time.

The match played at the Allianz Arena on Sunday, June 8, 2025, saw Portugal lift their second Nations League trophy, marking another proud moment for Cristiano Ronaldo and his national team.

Spain drew first blood in the 21st minute when Martín Zubimendi capitalized on an early opportunity to put his side ahead.

Portugal responded through Nuno Mendes five minutes later, assisted by Pedro Neto, but Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead just before halftime with a composed finish set up by Pedri. At the break, Spain led 2-1.

The second half saw Portugal fight back with renewed energy. The equalizer came in the 61st minute through the ever-reliable Cristiano Ronaldo, whose goal brought the match level again.

With neither team able to break the deadlock in regular or extra time, the contest was forced into a penalty shootout, setting the stage for a tense finale.

In the shootout, Portugal demonstrated remarkable composure, converting all five of their penalties. Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Nuno Mendes, and Ruben Neves all found the net.

Spain’s Mikel Merino, Alex Baena, and Isco scored their penalties, but Alvaro Morata’s miss proved costly as Portugal seized the advantage. Diogo Costa’s save against Morata turned the tide decisively in Portugal’s favour.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been substituted before the shootout, was visibly emotional as he returned to the pitch to celebrate.

This victory marks his third major international title, adding to his European Championship win and Portugal’s first Nations League triumph. The 39-year-old’s passion for representing his country remains undiminished.

Although the Nations League is seen as a secondary competition compared to the World Cup or Euros, the significance of international silverware is not lost on players or fans. For Portugal, the win not only reinforces their stature in European football but also sets the tone for their preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
