Premier League, EFL and Women’s League suspended indefinitely

A return from the coronavirus induced suspension for the English Premier League does not look near any time soon as the 2019-20 season has been suspended indefinitely.

The latest government directive has seen that all football competitions in England have been indefinitely suspended.

According to the Premier League, the league resumption will only happen when it is most appropriate and safe to do so.

The English football league (EFL) stated it would keep on reviewing the situation.

The last English Premier League game played was at the king’s power stadium on March 9 with Leicester City thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 before the league was suspended.

The current government guidance affects not only the Premier League and EFL but also the FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship.

Initially, the English Premier League was suspended till April 30, but a meeting with the 20 clubs on Friday, the FA made a statement to state that resumption will only be done when it is safe.

“It was acknowledged that the Premier League will not resume at the beginning of May – and that the 2019-20 season will only return when it is safe and appropriate to do so.”

While Liverpool are two wins away from the English Premier League title after leading the league with 82 points from 29 matches played – 25 points away from second place Liverpool – Leeds United lead the championship with just a point.

Meanwhile, the Premier League has stated its intent in assisting EFL and national league clubs financially after being the hardest hit with the lack of matches.

The Premier League will contribute a sum in the region of £125m to clubs in the lower leagues (EFL and national league).

Meanwhile, the EFL replied to show its appreciation to the short term financial relief.
