Real Madrid edge Atalanta in a five-goal thriller

Real Madrid secured a vital 3-2 win over Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, earning crucial points to boost their European campaign. The victory marked Los Blancos’ fourth win from four head-to-head meetings against La Dea.

Kylian Mbappé got Real Madrid off to a flying start, collecting Brahim Díaz’s pass and firing into the bottom corner just 10 minutes into the match for his 50th UCL goal. However, the Frenchman’s evening was cut short as he was forced off injured in the 36th minute. Despite this setback, Real Madrid continued to press, with Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham scoring in the second half to give their side a two-goal cushion.

Atalanta refused to give up, however, with Ademola Lookman smashing a shot through Lucas Vázquez’s legs and out of Thibaut Courtois’ reach to reduce the deficit. The Italian side pushed hard for an equalizer, but Real Madrid’s defense held firm, with Courtois denying substitutes Lazar Samardžić and Mateo Retegui in the dying minutes.

The win was a much-needed boost for Real Madrid, who had suffered back-to-back UCL defeats prior to this match. The victory propelled them to 18th in the standings, while Atalanta BC slipped to ninth. Despite the loss, La Dea remain unbeaten in European competition this season, aside from this defeat.

Real Madrid’s victory was also marked by a series of impressive individual performances. Vinícius Júnior’s clinical finish in the 57th minute was a highlight, while Jude Bellingham’s goal three minutes later showcased his growing influence on the team.

The match was an entertaining and closely contested affair, with both teams creating numerous scoring opportunities. In the end, Real Madrid’s superior finishing and defensive resilience proved decisive, earning them a hard-fought win over a resilient Atalanta side.

Real Madrid will travel to Rayo Vallecano over the weekend for a La Liga fixture as they continue their aim of defending the title and closing down on Barcelona.
