Real Madrid secured a narrow 2-1 victory over city rival Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 last-16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night. The tightly contested Madrid derby offered plenty of drama, with Rodrygo Goes and Brahim Diaz netting for the hosts, while Julian Alvarez kept Atletico in the tie with a brilliant solo goal.
It was a statement win for Real Madrid, which bounced back from a disappointing domestic defeat to Real Betis. Rodrygo struck early, finding the net just four minutes into the clash.
The Brazilian winger darted past Javi Galan to latch onto Fede Valverde’s clever pass before slotting home across Jan Oblak. It was Rodrygo’s fifth goal of the tournament, reaffirming his reputation as a clutch player on the European stage.
Despite falling behind so quickly, Atletico weathered Madrid’s early storm. Coach Diego Simeone’s side showed composure, keeping both Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe unusually quiet.
Atletico gradually grew into the game, and in the 26th minute, Alvarez delivered a moment of magic. Dancing past Eduardo Camavinga on the left side of the box, the Argentine curled a stunning shot into the top corner, leaving Thibaut Courtois with no chance.
Alvarez, who joined Atletico last summer as the club’s second-most expensive signing, continued his red-hot form, tallying his 10th goal in his last 14 matches. “For a moment we had the game under control,” Alvarez reflected. “But we knew it wouldn’t be easy because they were at home and have great players. We have 90 minutes to go and we’ll be at home with our fans.”
With the tie finely poised, Madrid needed a spark — and Brahim Diaz delivered. The Moroccan international, starting in place of the suspended Jude Bellingham, danced through Atletico’s defense in the 55th minute, leaving Jose Gimenez on the turf before calmly slotting past Oblak.
Diaz’s composure under pressure drew praise from fans and teammates alike. “I think we played a complete game today,” Diaz said after the match. “(My) goal was good and it earned us the win, but it’s not over. There’s still the second leg, and we have to give everything, like we did today.”
Atletico had opportunities to draw level again, with Antoine Griezmann firing wide and Gimenez heading over the bar. Carlo Ancelotti introduced veteran midfielder Luka Modric to steady the ship in the closing stages, and the 39-year-old’s experience helped Madrid hold firm.
Marcos Llorente summed up Atletico’s mindset heading into next week’s second leg at the Metropolitano. “We’re alive (in the tie) and we have to correct the mistakes we made and go for it in the second leg.”
With only a single goal separating the two Madrid giants, the return leg promises another fiercely fought derby, with a place in the quarterfinals — and a potential clash with Arsenal or PSV Eindhoven — at stake.
