Ronaldo makes World Cup history in Portugal’s big win

Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history on Tuesday night as Portugal cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their Group K clash at Houston Stadium.

The veteran forward scored twice in an emphatic win that secured Portugal’s first victory of the tournament and strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

The 39-year-old opened the scoring after just six minutes, becoming the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Ronaldo latched onto a João Cancelo assist before calmly finishing past the Uzbek goalkeeper, sending Portuguese supporters into celebration.

Portugal doubled their lead 11 minutes later when Nuno Mendes found the net to cap a dominant start from Roberto Martinez’s side.

Ronaldo was not finished there. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star struck again six minutes before halftime, converting from a Bruno Fernandes assist to make it 3-0.

His second goal of the evening further underlined Portugal’s superiority and ensured they went into the break with complete control of the contest.

Uzbekistan struggled to cope with Portugal’s attacking quality throughout the second half.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared just after the hour mark when goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure, handing Portugal a fourth goal.

The Central Asian side, making their World Cup debut, found themselves overwhelmed by the pace and movement of their opponents.

Portugal continued to push forward in search of more goals, with Ronaldo repeatedly threatening to complete his hat-trick.

While the captain was unable to add a third, substitute Rafael Leão rounded off the scoring in the 87th minute with a superb strike into the top corner after being set up by Nelson Semedo.

The goal capped an impressive team performance that showcased Portugal’s attacking depth.

The result moves Portugal into a strong position in Group K after opening their campaign with a draw against DR Congo.

For Uzbekistan, who also suffered defeat to Colombia in their first match, qualification hopes now hinge on securing a positive result against DR Congo in their final group fixture.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s record-breaking night will dominate the headlines as the Portuguese icon continues to rewrite football history on the world’s biggest stage.
