England manager Thomas Tuchel says he will “review” Jude Bellingham’s reaction to being substituted during the Three Lions’ 2–0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania, stressing that “behaviour is key” within his squad.
Bellingham, making his first England start since June, showed clear frustration when replaced by Morgan Rogers in the 84th minute after earlier receiving a yellow card.
The Real Madrid midfielder waved his arms in protest as his number went up, despite Tuchel’s pre-match warning about avoiding unnecessary suspensions.
With Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent red card serving as an example, Tuchel said he had reminded his squad about the importance of discipline, noting that another booking for Bellingham would have ruled him out of England’s World Cup opener.
Tuchel said he expects respect for teammates and acceptance of tactical decisions. He pointed out that Rogers himself was disappointed not to start, but had been rotated due to his heavy club workload.
“Decisions are made and you have to accept it. We are about standards, level, and commitment to each other.” Tuchel said.
Bellingham had been one of seven changes to the starting XI and produced flashes of brilliance before his withdrawal. His reaction was described as “furious” by former England defender Stephen Warnock, who noted the midfielder celebrated Harry Kane’s second goal just moments before being taken off.
Tuchel later insisted he did not want to “make it bigger than it is” but said standards would not change “because someone waves their arms.”
Despite his frustration, Bellingham applauded fans as he walked off and shook Tuchel’s hand, an action Warnock called “the right thing.”
Teammates Dan Burn and Phil Foden were seen speaking to him near the touchline, appearing to calm him down as he made his way to the bench. Warnock said the message would have been simple: “Don’t do anything stupid.”
Former England defender Conor Coady, who played alongside Bellingham at the 2022 World Cup, said the 22-year-old would understand the manager’s decision after reflecting on the game.
Coady suggested Bellingham feels he is “playing catch-up” after missing the previous international camp, and with Rogers pushing strongly for a starting role.
