Real Madrid clinched a convincing 3-0 win over RB Salzburg on Thursday evening in Philadelphia, securing top spot in Group H and advancing to the round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup. A standout performance from Vinicius Jr., who scored one goal and assisted another, proved decisive under rainy skies at Lincoln Financial Field.
The Spanish giants topped the group with seven points, finishing two ahead of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, who defeated Pachuca 2-0 in the day’s other match. Salzburg, with four points, and Pachuca, who exited without a single point, were both eliminated from the tournament.
Real Madrid will now face Juventus, the Group G runner-up, in a high-stakes knockout clash on Tuesday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Al-Hilal will meet Manchester City a day earlier in Orlando.
In Thursday’s encounter, Real Madrid, under manager Xabi Alonso, imposed their rhythm early and dominated possession, though they initially struggled to convert chances. Salzburg’s teenage goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky was impressive, making a crucial early stop to deny Vinicius from close range and frustrating Madrid’s attack for much of the first half.
Vinicius was lively throughout and eventually broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Midfielder Jude Bellingham delivered a superb through ball that Vinicius controlled with flair, dancing past two defenders before finishing clinically from the edge of the box.
Moments before the halftime whistle, the Brazilian was at the center of the action again. After pouncing on a loose ball inside the Salzburg penalty area, he produced an inventive back-heeled assist for Federico Valverde, who smashed home Madrid’s second goal from close range.
Despite maintaining control after the break, Real Madrid’s finishing continued to falter. They created several more chances but failed to capitalize until the 84th minute. A swift counterattack saw Gonzalo Garcia latch onto a through pass and lob the ball over the advancing Zawieschitzky to seal the result.
With this victory, Madrid not only demonstrated their depth and attacking flair but also issued a statement ahead of their knockout stage meeting with Juventus. For Salzburg, it was a disappointing end to their campaign, though Zawieschitzky’s performance provided a bright spot for the Austrian side.
