19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz won his second Masters 1000 title on Sunday after defeating Alexander Zverev in a game of two sets. Alcaraz, who beat world number one, Novak Djokovic in the semifinals a day before, was barely phased by the German as he beat him 6-3, 6-1. The win has moved the Spaniard to the position of world number six.
Alcaraz had an amazing week playing in his home country. Besides winning the title, he also achieved some personal feats, defeating some of the top-ranked players in the game, including Djokovic, Zverev, and compatriot Rafael Nadal, who he outclassed in the quarterfinals. The win on Sunday came less than two months after winning the Miami Open, his first Masters 1000 title. The Madrid Open also marked his fourth title of the year. Second, to Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alcaraz is the player with the most wins this season.
The match on Sunday did not pose any difficulty to Alcaraz, who enjoyed cheers from the home crowd. He was able to capitalise on Zverev’s errors early in the game, as he broke his opponent, making the scoreline 4-2. He was then able to gently sail to an easy win, only for him to start the second round with much gusto. In no time, he broke his opponent for a 2-1 lead and went on to win the set, denying Zverev the chance to add to his score.
The game on Sunday was nothing short of spectacular, and it offered a glimpse of what to expect from the teenager in the future. No doubt, he has been able to prove himself to a large extent this season and is not ready to quit anytime soon. Zverev, after the game, commented that Alcaraz was currently the “best player in the world” and that it was “great for tennis that we have such a new superstar that is going to win so many Grand Slams, that is going to be World No 1, and I think is going to win this tournament many more times.”
