Jannik Sinner and Linda Noskova were crowned Wimbledon singles champions on Sunday after both came through hard-fought finals at the All England Club.
Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title with a 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alexander Zverev.
Zverev edged a tight opening set in a tiebreak after neither player could find a breakthrough on serve.
Both men struck the ball cleanly from the baseline and produced several lengthy rallies, but it was the German who held his nerve in the biggest moments to move ahead.
Sinner raised his level in the second-set tiebreak, winning it comfortably to level the contest.
The defending champion secured the crucial break in the third set and never surrendered his advantage.
He continued to serve effectively in the fourth, saving key break points before closing out the match to claim a second consecutive Wimbledon title and another Grand Slam trophy.
The defeat marked another painful near miss for Zverev in a major final. The German competed well for long stretches but was unable to halt Sinner once the Italian settled into his rhythm after the opening set.
Earlier in the weekend, Noskova completed a breakthrough run in the women’s final to win her first Grand Slam title, defeating fellow Czech Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
The 21-year-old started by dominating the first set, taking it 6-2 as she consistently rushed Muchova and dictated play from the baseline.
Muchova fought back in the second set despite trailing 5-2. The experienced Czech came off five straight games to steal the set 7-5 and force a decider, giving herself a chance to win her first Grand Slam title.
However, Noskova recovered quickly from the disappointment. She took back control in the third set, broke serve at a crucial stage, and did not drop the lead to secure the biggest victory of her career.
The title makes Noskova the youngest Wimbledon women’s champion since Petra Kvitova won the tournament in 2011.
It also serves as a memorable conclusion to a remarkable fortnight in London, where she defeated several higher-ranked opponents on her way to lifting the Venus Rosewater Dish.
