Roger Federer asks not to give emotional importance to defeats in tennis

Over the last two decades, Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has been the epitome of greatness and inspiration in the sport. The 39-year-old has broken many records in his career and scripted some of the greatest wins but amid all the greatness he has also lost many times.

Federer recently spoke at length about various topics which surround defeat in tennis. He advised that a person must not ponder upon his defeat for too long as it affects them mentally and they won’t be able to focus on their future matches. He felt the necessity of analyzing defeats and points out the area to improve but not to be over-emotional on a result that is in the past.

“It’s from my defeats that I’ve learned the most. The most important thing is not to give them too much emotional importance. Don’t judge yourself at all costs. Analyze and understand. You can do this alone, or by talking with others to get them out of the disappointment. Some people think for days and nights about the mistakes they made. I chose to analyze very quickly. It helps me to move on,” Federer stated.

The 20-time Grand slam winner has often ended up being heartbroken after losing matches. His fiery rivalry against Rafael Nadal has often left him with agony and at times he has let the emotions get the better of him. But with time passing by, the Swiss maestro has grown more matured. He had such a setback against Novak Djokovic at the 2019 Wimbledon final where he gave away two match points and ended up losing the match.

Currently the 39-year-old is sweating it out in Dubai as he returned to the Tour after his long injury concern. Federer featured at the ATP Doha as he lost in the second round against Georgian tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili. Incidentally, Basilashvili also went on to win the tournament defeating Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the finals.

It has been a tough phase for the 8-time Wimbledon winner to come back after a 13-month long break. But now Federer has shown that courage as he prepares for the upcoming clay-court events.
