Wembanyama Wins Magic Johnson Award, Honoured for Excellence On and Off the Court

Victor Wembanyama has added another major accolade to his rapidly growing resume, winning the 2025-26 Magic Johnson Award, as announced by the Professional Basketball Writers Association on Thursday.

The award recognises the NBA player who best combines on-court brilliance with professionalism, cooperation, and respect in interactions with the media and fans. Wembanyama’s selection reflects not just his dominance in games, but also his thoughtful and engaging presence away from them.

The 22-year-old San Antonio Spurs star delivered an outstanding season, averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, while also leading the league with 3.1 blocks. His performances earned him a second All-Star selection, underlining his status as one of the league’s brightest young talents.

However, it was his conduct beyond the court that set him apart. Throughout the season, Wembanyama built a reputation for openness and respect in his dealings with reporters, often engaging in thoughtful discussions on a wide range of topics.

PBWA president Howard Beck praised the French star’s approach, stating that he “thoroughly embodies the spirit of this award” and highlighting his willingness to engage on subjects ranging from basketball to social issues. Beck also noted Wembanyama’s patience, humor, and depth, describing him as “a deep thinker who understands the power of his words.”

Wembanyama’s achievement is historic for the Spurs, as he becomes the first player from the franchise to receive the honour. He is also the youngest winner since Kevin Durant claimed the award at the same age in 2011.

The voting process saw strong competition from across the league. Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers finished second for the second consecutive year. Other finalists included Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.

The award, established in 2001, is named after Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, who was widely respected for his gracious and insightful relationship with the media throughout his career.

With this recognition, Wembanyama continues to fulfil the promise he made before entering the league in 2023 — to excel in every aspect of being an NBA professional. His impact, both in performance and personality, is already leaving a lasting mark on the league.
