Ángel Di María Returns to Rosario Central After 18 Years

Ángel Di María was unveiled as Rosario Central’s newest signing on Monday, bringing tears to the eyes of the 37-year-old football legend. Eighteen years after he left the club that shaped his early career, Di María has finally returned, fulfilling a lifelong promise to wear the Rosario jersey once more.

“Coming home after so long is something very special. It was what I wanted. To play for Central again,” said a visibly emotional Di María. “Being a champion with Central is the only thing I’m missing.”

Di María, who was born in Rosario and joined the club’s youth setup at age four, made his professional debut in 2005. His talent quickly propelled him to the international stage, earning a transfer to Benfica in 2007 following a successful Under-17 World Cup campaign.

From there, he carved out a glittering career across Europe with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and two stints at Benfica. Along the way, he amassed nearly 30 major trophies, including a starring role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph.

Despite the worldwide success, his heart remained in Rosario. “I couldn’t believe it when I was training today. It felt like it was the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed my first training session,” he shared, smiling through emotion.

His return, however, has not been without concern. Di María delayed his homecoming for years due to death threats from drug dealer gangs. Rosario, located 300 kilometres north of Buenos Aires, has long struggled with violent crime, largely fueled by battles over control of the drug trade. These safety concerns kept the star away despite his deep connection to the city and club.

Yet, now back and wearing Central’s colours, Di María appears focused solely on the game. Fresh off a Club World Cup run with Benfica, where he scored three goals before the team’s elimination by Chelsea, the veteran shows no signs of slowing down.

“Right now, I’m not thinking about retirement,” he affirmed. “I’m thinking about playing, about enjoying myself. About continuing at whatever level I’ve been doing.”

Di María’s return is more than a football story. It’s one of resilience, loyalty, and unfinished dreams. Rosario Central fans can now dare to hope that their returning hero might just help them chase glory once again.
