Bayern Munich will have to give equal importance to departures in the summer if they want to bring in new players like Florian Wirtz in the summer. It does look like one of the full-backs in the squad can help in raising funds.
According to close sources in Germany, right-back Sacha Boey could be heading towards the Allianz Arena’s exit door at the end of the season. He is reportedly one of the top candidates to leave Bayern. Boey is also open to a move for more playing time.
Boey was brought in from Galatasaray on a fairly high transfer fee of €30 million in last year’s winter transfer window.
The Frenchman came with great expectations after his stellar performance for the Turkish side in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage.
His rapid speed on the right-hand side makes him a prominent attacking threat that can complement any wingers on overlapping runs.
At the time, the transfer made much sense when Bayern were extremely thin at the right-back position, with Noussair Mazraoui being frequently hampered by injuries and Josip Stanisic out on loan. But it backfired.
His first start for Bayern was a disastrous one as he played poorly, and the team was dismantled 3-0 by Bayer Leverkusen.
In all fairness, Boey was played out of position as a left wing-back. It would be his only start for Bayern in the 23/24 season as Sacha Boey could not stay healthy, and Thomas Tuchel failed to incorporate him into the game plan.
The second season started more promisingly. Boey was in the starting XI against VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga opener and recorded an assist after an outstanding solo run, displaying great speed and technique. But that was the only highlight this season so far for the 24-year-old. He suffered from meniscus and ankle injuries that kept him sidelined for a big chunk of the season. Apart from that, his minutes came mostly from stoppage time when the scores were already settled.
Galatasaray is currently the frontrunner to sign Sacha Boey in the summer transfer window. They have been monitoring the right-back in the past few months, hoping for a potential reunion.
Boey is still a very talented player. He is only 24 with an extraordinary pace. He had shown glimpses of excellence on both sides of the pitch with Bayern, but never had the proper chance to fulfill his potential, being too injury-prone. A move back to the Turkish Super Lig could be beneficial for his future and development.
If Boey leaves, the right-back position will be rotated between Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic.
