Belgium’s World Cup Qualification hangs in balance following winless run

Belgium have drawn both of their matches at the 2026 World Cup, leaving qualification for the knockout stages still within their control.

Following a goalless stalemate against Iran on Sunday, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois declared that it was now all or nothing for his team.

Despite dominating the game with 70.1 percent possession and creating 1.79 expected goals from 23 shots, Belgium were unable to break down a resilient and defensively organized Iranian side. The match became even tougher when defender Nathan Ngoy was sent off.

Belgium’s 23 shots without scoring represent their highest total in a World Cup fixture since they managed 28 against Saudi Arabia in 1994.

Across the current tournament, the squad has registered 69 shots since Michy Batshuayi last scored for them against Canada in 2022.

Under coach Rudi Garcia, Belgium sit third in Group G. They can secure a top-two position and advance if they defeat New Zealand in their final group game on June 26. Courtois stressed the importance of that result while warning against complacency.

He reported that Iran had defended in a deeper and more compact block than anticipated, adopting a 5-4-1 formation that made penetration difficult.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper added that Belgium absolutely had to win against New Zealand, although he anticipated a similar challenge with opponents likely to place eleven players behind the ball.

Iran currently occupy second place in Group G and will face Egypt in their concluding fixture.

Head coach Ardeshir Ghalenoei expressed satisfaction with his team’s performances throughout the tournament, particularly given the various off-field challenges they had overcome; his side remain capable of finishing top of the group.

For Belgium, the focus now shifts entirely to the New Zealand encounter. A victory would guarantee progression, but failure to score in recent games highlights the need for greater attacking efficiency.

Courtois’s message underscored the high stakes, reminding players and fans alike that every opportunity must be seized in what has become a decisive fixture.

The team’s ability to convert dominance into goals will be the key factor as they aim to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
