Ecuador produced a spirited comeback to defeat Germany 2-1 in New Jersey, sealing a place in the World Cup knockout stage after a dramatic final Group E encounter. The victory came after a difficult start to the tournament, with Ecuador failing to score in their opening two matches, but they rose to the occasion when it mattered most.
Germany, who had already secured top spot in the group before kick-off, made an explosive start. Just two minutes into the match, Leroy Sane collected a clever pass from Florian Wirtz inside the penalty area before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Hernan Galindez to hand his side an early lead.
The goal sparked frustration among the Ecuador players, who believed Pedro Vite had been fouled moments earlier following a high boot from Alexandar Pavlovic. Their appeals were waved away, but the sense of injustice appeared to fuel Ecuador’s response.
Backed by a sea of passionate supporters dressed in yellow, Ecuador quickly found their rhythm. Seven minutes after falling behind, Sunderland forward Nilson Angulo levelled the score with a composed low strike that beat Manuel Neuer. The equaliser lifted both the team and the crowd, setting the tone for an energetic display.
Ecuador maintained their attacking intent after the break and continued to trouble a surprisingly subdued German side. Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata reacted fastest to a corner, beating Neuer to the ball and scoring the decisive goal that sent Ecuador’s supporters into celebration.
Angulo, who constantly threatened Germany’s defence throughout the contest, earned the man-of-the-match award after an impressive performance. Ecuador also showed resilience in the closing stages, producing several vital defensive interventions to protect their lead as tension grew inside the stadium.
For Germany, the defeat carried little consequence in terms of qualification, with their place in the last 32 already guaranteed. Their performance, however, lacked urgency and intensity compared to Ecuador’s determined display.
The result also dealt a blow to Scotland’s hopes of advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, making their path to qualification considerably more difficult.
Having struggled to find the net in their first two matches, Ecuador finally showcased the attacking quality within their squad. If they can maintain this level of performance and continue to draw energy from their passionate supporters, they could prove to be dangerous opponents in the knockout rounds.
