Alexander Isak delivered an outstanding performance as Sweden thrashed Tunisia 5-1 in their opening World Cup match.
The forward now prepares to face his Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo when the Netherlands take on Sweden in a vital Group F fixture on Saturday.
Gakpo has cautioned that his side must remain vigilant against Isak, who posed a significant threat in Sweden’s convincing victory.
After twice surrendering the lead in a 2-2 draw against Japan on matchday one, Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands team finds itself under pressure. Sweden’s dominant display has heightened the stakes in Houston.
Although the Opta supercomputer still rates the Oranje as favorites to top the group, their chances stand at just 40 percent.
A defeat would eliminate them from contention for first place. Anything short of a victory could force the Netherlands into a desperate battle for a last-32 spot.
Currently, simulations show them exiting at the group stage in only 10 percent of scenarios, with advancement in 90 percent.
Gakpo highlighted Isak’s danger after the Swede scored once and provided two assists on matchday one.
His three-goal involvements already match the tally of any Sweden player at a single World Cup since Henrik Larsson’s three goals in 2002.
This comes after Isak’s debut season at Anfield was severely disrupted by a leg fracture that kept him sidelined for more than four months.
The Liverpool forward stated that everyone was aware of Isak’s quality and emphasized that the Netherlands needed to pay special attention to him.
With the Netherlands failing to secure a win at the start of a challenging group, Gakpo acknowledged the limited margin for error.
He added that his team knew they had to win their matches because they were determined to progress from the group stage.
The Netherlands have drawn their last two World Cup fixtures, both ending 2-2, including their quarter-final penalty shoot-out loss to Argentina in 2022.
They have only once before gone three matches without a win at the tournament, enduring a five-game winless streak between 1978 and 1990.
