Inter Mlian’s defeat leaves Champions League places wide open

After Inter Milan suffered another loss on Sunday away at Bologna, the battle for Champions League spots will be intense.

The defeat could see Simone Inzaghi’s joint second with AC Milan as Diavolo as they welcome Atalanta to the San Siro. This result could inspire them to get the needed win against their visitors.

The same goes for Roma should they win their next game. This means goals difference will separate the three teams going into week 25.

After their win on Saturday, the league leaders,  Napoli, remain 18 points clear at the top of the table. It is increasingly difficult to see anything other than a Scudetto this season.

They have left others to be the chasing pack. They have to play for the Champions League, which will be increasingly tight as we head into the final 14 rounds.

Apart from Giallorossi taking on rock-bottom Cremonese on Tuesday, Lazio will have the opportunity to close the gap, as they play struggling Sampdoria on Monday and are on 42 points.

Meanwhile, Juventus should be taken into consideration. Should they win their appeal against the 15-point penalty for artificially inflating transfer fees to boost capital gains, they will surge back up to 47 points with a game yet to be played.

In a related development, Lautaro Martinez has apologized to Inter fans after their  1-0 defeat to Bologna left them 18 points off Napoli.

The Argentine said the Nerazurri will ‘get nowhere playing like this.’

Bologna took the maximum points at the Stadio Dall’Ara courtesy of a Riccardo Orsolini chest and half-volley into the roof of the net.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, the world cup winner calls for consistency, having just played a great game in the Champions League.

While noting that they arrived, Fiorentina fired up but put in a performance that was below par.
