Barcelona weren’t at their best in Wednesday’s matchup against Getafe, but in the end, it didn’t matter as Robert Lewandowski’s first-half strike was enough to claim all three points.
The Blaugrana have enjoyed a sparkling start under German tactician Hansi Flick, winning all six of their La Liga matches heading into Wednesday.
They made it seven from seven despite failing to put away Getafe, as Barcelona struggled to put the match away despite plenty of chances.
Barcelona needed just 19 minutes to open the scoring. After some early chances for both sides, the Blaugrana surged forward down the right, with Jules Kounde sending in what looked like an easy cross for David Soria to catch.
Unfortunately for Getafe, Soria couldn’t get a firm grasp on the ball, which fell right to the feet of Robert Lewandowski to put the home side ahead.
Although Barcelona threatened to add a second during the rest of the first half, Getafe held on to head into the break down just the single goal.
Much like the opening half, Barcelona controlled proceedings after the restart. They finally carved out a great scoring opportunity in the 58th minute. Lamine Yamal’s curling strike from distance was seemingly destined for the top corner, only for Soria to palm away the effort.
Soria proved decisive again in the 70th, diving to his right to palm a Raphinha free-kick away from goal as Barcelona pushed for a second, but couldn’t find a way past the Getafe goalkeeper.
Eric Garcia fired a loose ball from a free kick over the bar despite being inside the six-yard box, while Raphinha headed wide of the goal despite being unmarked.
It nearly cost them in injury time when Getafe had a clear chance, but Borja Mayoral could only fire wide of the mark as Barcelona reestablished their four-point advantage over Real Madrid.
