The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) in Matchweek 32, starting from April 12. This innovative system will enhance the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making, providing a better experience for fans and broadcast viewers. The technology has been developed in collaboration with PGMOL and sports data company Genius Sports.
The SAOT system uses 30 high-speed cameras installed around each Premier League stadium, capturing footage at 100 frames per second. These cameras track the exact movement of the ball and up to 10,000 data points per player, automatically flagging potential offside incidents. The system will suggest a “kick point” and create offside lines, saving time and improving accuracy.
While the technology is semi-automated, human input is still required to confirm decisions. The video assistant referee (VAR) will review and approve the SAOT-generated outcome, ensuring accuracy and consistency. The system will also consider subjective offside calls, such as deliberate play by a defender or interference with an opponent.
The introduction of SAOT aims to reduce delays in offside decision-making, with an expected average reduction of 30 seconds. The system will display a 3D virtual replay of the incident, featuring a red line for offside decisions and a green line for onside decisions. A white vertical wall will represent the offside line, with a blue “pulse” on the defender’s relevant body part.
The Premier League has emphasized that SAOT will not affect the accuracy of offside decisions, which have been 100% correct this season. The technology will enhance the speed and efficiency of the process, providing a better experience for fans and broadcast viewers. The league has also confirmed that SAOT will not introduce “toenail” offsides, maintaining the existing “thicker” lines approach.
The introduction of SAOT is part of the Premier League’s ongoing efforts to improve the accuracy and efficiency of VAR decision-making. With the technology set to be used in the FA Cup fifth round and beyond, fans can expect a more streamlined and accurate offside decision-making process in the coming weeks.
