PSG secures comfortable win against Liverpool in Paris

Paris Saint-Germain took a commanding step toward the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a dominant 2-0 victory over Liverpool in their quarter-final first-leg clash at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.

The defending champions asserted control early, with Désiré Doué opening the scoring in the 11th minute. 

His effort, aided by a deflection, wrong-footed the goalkeeper and set the tone for a confident PSG display in front of their home supporters.

Despite Liverpool’s hopes of responding after recent domestic performances, they struggled to gain any attacking momentum. 

The visitors failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match, highlighting a lack of cutting edge and cohesion in their approach.

PSG doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished calmly in the 65th minute. 

The goal came after a well-worked move, with João Neves providing the decisive assist to cap another slick attacking sequence.

Liverpool’s defensive setup, which saw them adopt a more cautious system, drew criticism for being overly passive. 

The Premier League side spent long periods on the back foot and were fortunate not to concede more, as PSG created several additional chances late in the game.

The result leaves Liverpool with a significant challenge ahead in the return leg at Anfield, where they must overturn a two-goal deficit to keep their Champions League hopes alive, while Paris Saint-Germain will be confident of finishing the job and advancing to the last four.

Elsewhere, the other game between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid ended in a shock 2-0 away victory for Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou, leaving Barcelona with a major challenge ahead in the second leg. 

Diego Simeone’s side produced a disciplined and clinical performance, scoring through a well-taken free-kick from Julián Álvarez and a composed finish by Alexander Sørloth. 

The result marked Atletico’s first win at Camp Nou since 2006 and puts them firmly in control of the tie.

Barcelona’s night was made significantly harder in the first half when young defender Pau Cubarsí was sent off, forcing the hosts to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match. 

Despite flashes of attacking intent, including lively moments from Lamine Yamal, the home side struggled to break down Atletico’s organized defense and failed to convert their chances.
