Real Madrid held by Al-Hilal in Club World Cup group stage thriller

Real Madrid were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabian champions Al-Hilal in their opening Group H match at the FIFA Club World Cup.

The game played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, marked the beginning of a new era for Los Blancos under recently-appointed manager Xabi Alonso, but it was far from the dream start he would have hoped for.

Gonzalo García opened the scoring for Madrid in the 34th minute, tapping in from close range after a well-timed assist from Rodrygo. The Spanish side appeared in control, dominating possession and pushing Al-Hilal deep into their own half.

However, the Saudi club hit back just before halftime when Portuguese midfielder Rúben Neves calmly converted a penalty in the 41st minute after a handball in the box.

The second half offered plenty of drama, particularly late on. Real Madrid were awarded a controversial penalty in the 89th minute when Mohammed Al Qahtani was judged to have handled the ball, despite appearing unaware of Fran Garcia’s presence behind him.

Federico Valverde stepped up to take the spot-kick but was denied by a heroic save from Yassine Bounou, who dived low to his right to preserve the draw.

Valverde’s miss capped a frustrating night for Madrid, who also missed several other chances, including a close-range header by Gonzalo García in stoppage time. 

Bounou’s commanding performance in goal earned him widespread praise, with his penalty save proving crucial in keeping Al-Hilal’s qualification hopes alive.

The match was played with intensity and physicality, as evidenced by yellow cards for Neves and Al Qahtani late in the game.

The new rule allowing corners to be given when goalkeepers hold the ball for more than eight seconds added another layer of intrigue, with Real nearly capitalizing in the 97th minute, but to no avail.

With 62,415 fans in attendance and global attention on Alonso’s managerial debut, the result serves as both a reality check for Madrid and a statement performance by Al-Hilal.

Real will now need a win in their next match to boost their chances of advancing, while Al-Hilal can take confidence from their disciplined and spirited showing.
